Arkanoid

Grade: B+ with controller

             B without controller

This is about as simple as they come, but quite fun. Your goal is to get rid of all the bricks by bouncing a ball off of a platform that you move around the bottom of the screen. Each level gets tougher and tougher to clear all the bricks. While this game is quite fun, it's also very frustrating. If you don't have the Arkanoid controller, the game is almost impossible. The platform moves much too slowly to catch up to the ball. Usually this can be made up by anticipating the flight path, but on levels like number 3, it's not always possible.

Positives:

Very addicting, simple game.

Glaring Negatives:

Without the Arkanoid controller it's too hard.

Graphics and Sound: Fine

Pretty simple but not bad. The blocks have cool, vibrant colors and the sound effects are very simple but enjoyable.

Gameplay and Controls: Not Great/Great

This is my only real complaint with the game. The controls are great except the platform moves way too slow. You really need to get the special Arkanoid controller to fully enjoy the game, but it is really rare.

Now that I own the controller the controls have been upgraded to great.  You can whip the platform all over the screen with no problem.

Features: Decent

Sometimes hitting a block will drop a tube which contains a special skill. They are as follows:

Green - You can hold the ball
Grey - Extra Life
Pink - skip the level by going through a hole that opens up on the right
Light Blue - 2 more balls for a total of three
Red - You can shoot lasers by hitting B
Orange - The balls slow down a lot.
Dark Blue - Your platform doubles in length

Fun?: Very

There's just something about this game that's fun and addicting. Kinda like Tetris, a simple game but fun.

Challenge: Really Hard

This is one tough game. After a while the ball really starts sizzling. As mentioned before without the Arkanoid controller the game is nearly impossible.

Replay: Tons

So addictive you'll be coming back for more.

2 Player: Yup

2 players can take turns playing with 2 player mode.

Online Manual?: Yes

TSR's site has one.

Bottom Line: Oh Yeah

If you can find this thing with the Arkanoid controller definitely buy it. Even without the controller the game is very fun, just be warned that it can be very frustrating.

2nd Opinion – Agent J: B/C

Arkanoid is fun but tough.  Even with the special controller I’d give it a B.  Without the controller it is barely worth playing.

Tips and Tricks

·        You get an extra guy at 20,000 points.

·        Don't follow the ball around, you'll never keep up. Try to anticipate where it will land and be there.

·        You can aim where the ball will go with practice by moving the platform at the last second.

·        Get all of the extra tubes. They give you tons of points which are very helpful in getting extra guys.

·        When you have more than one ball in the air, no more tubes will fall. So unless you really want to have extra balls flying about, let them go. You'll get a lot more points this way.

·        You can be a little more risky going after the orange tubes, because once you get it the ball will substantially slow down. Then you should have time to go hit the ball.
