You have to give LJN credit.
They are one company that didn’t know when to give up. They made one bad game after another
but since they always released them under popular movie and T.V. licenses
they could continue to sucker people into buying them. Back
to the Future is yet another example of a game that should have been
really cool but instead LJN turned it into a very strange
platformer. In this game the
screen is constantly scrolling up while you as Marty must make it to the
end of the street before your time runs out. Each time you get hit by an enemy you
fall to the ground, lose any special item you have and lose a few
precious seconds. If at the end of
200 seconds you have not reached the end of the street that you are
running up (for no apparent reason) then you will lose a life and must
try again. Your enemies in this
game consist of random people on
the street that you must avoid running over, benches and cracks in the
road that you have to avoid running into and the ever dreaded bee that
will sting you and knock you to the ground. I don’t remember deadly bees from the movie
but I’m sure they were in there somewhere. Now with all that said this game isn't
as bad as everyone says. Most reviews I see rate this game as one of the
worst ever. It definitely has its problems, but I think it's sorta fun.
At least you are Marty McFly stuck in the past, trying to get back to the
future. But it isn't much like the movie and there isn't much variation.
Positives:
Well, the game is a little fun if you take the time to get used to
it. It does involve a few elements
of the movie like the skateboard, Biff and the bullies and the photograph
that lets you know if your time is slipping away.
Glaring
Negatives:
This is our Back to the Future game? Wow, LJN missed the boat big time. Doc Brown is not integral to the game,
it barely follows any parts from the movie and every level is basically
the same. If you die at any end
guy your game ends, which is some pretty hard cheese to me.
Graphics
and Sound: Decent But Not Good
The graphics are okay, but nothing great. The sound is definitely
repetitive.
Gameplay
and Controls: Pretty Good
I've seen people complain that the controls aren't responsive, but I
disagree. I thought the controls were fine. You just have to get used to
how the skateboard works and what items you can't run into.
Features:
Not Alot
There's a skateboard you can get and a stone or yo-yo that you pick
up. Then there are the mini-games which are entirely different. Other
than that just run and jump.
Fun?:
Somewhat
Although the game is exactly the same for the vast majority of it, I
actually somewhat enjoyed it. The mini-games are fun and break up the
monotony a bit. Basically if you don't like the first level, you won't
like the game.
Challenge: Decent
The first time you play it, it seems impossible. However, after a
while it actually gets to be fairly easy. The biggest pain is that no
matter how many lives you have left, you only have one chance to win the
game at the end. If you fail, it's over. I guess this does make sense
with the way the movie was, but it's still quite annoying.
Replay:
Not Alot
After beating this game there isn't really anything left to do. I
didn't see any hidden features or anything, and there certainly isn't
enough variety to bring you back.
2
Player: None
I can't imagine how boring it would be to watch someone play this game.
I shudder to think about it.
Online
Manual?: Yes

Bottom
Line: Probably Not
Personally I enjoyed it, but it's not a must have by any means. It can
be fun, but it sure is repetitive.
