Now here is a game that I didn't have much
hope for. It is based on the little toys of the same name that were
popular for a brief moment in the early 90s. Because of this, I figured
the game would be just as lame as the toys were. What I found out,
though, is that this game is basically Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game
Lite. You can choose to be either Dracula or Frankenstein's Monster and
must make your way through 6 boards that are similar to the boards on
Ninja Turtles, only easier. Instead of picking up pizzas for health you
get hearts. The nice thing is that they come a lot sooner than the old
pizzas. You gain extra lives exactly like you do in TMNT 2; by killing
bad guys. You get one point per baddie, so in the 2 player mode you might
want to share the killings or you can get competitive. This game is very
fun but ultimately way too easy.
Positives:
The graphics and sound are both
top-notch in this game. It really
plays like a platform version of Micro Machines. It is obvious that everyone involved
put a lot of work into this one, which really surprises me.
Glaring
Negatives:
The only real negative is that
the game is too easy. If it weren’t so easy, this game would be an A-. The other negative is that both of the
characters play exactly the same so what’s the point?
Graphics
and Sound: Awesome
Monster
In My Pocket has very
cool graphics. What makes them neat is that you are one of your owner’s toys and you must battle the rest of the
toys. So for the majority of the game you are battling in a house where
everything seems huge. You have to jump onto apples and toasters, you can
either battle going down the stairs or be sly and just slide down the
banister. The makers of this game clearly put a lot of work into the look
of this game. The music is also good, I usually don't like video game
music but this is another one that impresses me.
Gameplay
and Controls: Amazing
One thing that makes this game a
standout is its gameplay. On each board you have different options such
as just staying along the ground and fighting or climbing up things and
fighting on tables and ledges. Usually I find that it is easier the
higher up you go because you are at the same height as the flying guys
that bomb on you. Your weapon is also cool because it works both as an
offensive and defensive weapon because it will block some of the things
that are hurled towards you. Also, you better figure out right away how
to double-jump because it becomes crucial early.
Features:
Continues
The makers of this game gave you
3 continues which was nice of them but you can beat this game without
them pretty easily.
Fun?:
Very
Don't try and tell me you've
never dreamt of being a mini-Dracula before. This game is really nice
because you'll be good from the second you put in your NES. It only stops
being fun once you've beaten it an hour later. One drawback is that both
Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster have exactly the same weapon, jump and
speed so there isn't really a difference between them.
Challenge:
A little
The one area that this game lacks
in is challenge. This game is very simple but the end guy is a bit
challenging. This game also has one of the coolest twist endings in NES history...
Replay:
A little
You could try and beat this game
without continues or you could compete with a friend for the higher death
count.
2
Player: Yes!
You and a friend can play as
teammates just like in TMNT 2. When I asked Agent K to play, though, he
refused because he didn't want to be "That ugly Frankenstein, nice
try buttcheese!"
Online
Manual?: Yes
Head on over to Nintendo Age for all the manuals.
Bottom
Line: If you can find it, get it.
You will not be disappointed with
this one. Also, if you have a friend willing to be the ugly monster than
I am jealous of you because you will have twice the fun that I have had
with this game.
