Chip ‘N Dale’s Rescue Rangers

Grade: B++

For anyone who's seen the cartoon Rescue Rangers you know what's going on already. It's a platformer in which you can be Chip, Dale, or both. You basically cruise around killing stuff with boxes you find moving from level to level. This is quite a fun platformer. In addition to playing by yourself you can play with a friend which adds a lot of fun. Not only can you then throw boxes, but you can throw your buddy as well. Now who doesn't like that! I would say this is an excellent second tier platformer. The only disappointment I had was not getting to play all the characters, but they do make brief appearances.

Positives:

I’m always a fan of two-player simultaneous games so that’s a plus right off the bat.  The controls are also very solid and the music is catch as well.  I like that there is a map so that you can choose which level you want to take on next ala Super Mario Bros. 3.  You can either challenge yourself by beating every level or take short cuts to beat the game quicker.

Glaring Negatives:

The first level can be a bit tricky as you sort out the controls but once you’ve mastered all of the tricks at your disposal the game becomes very easy.

Graphics and Sound: Great

The graphics are great. Since you're a tiny chipmunk there are giant faucets, pens, etc. I love the casino level where you jump around on slot machines and such. Also the music is quite catchy.

Gameplay and Controls: Pretty Good

The jumping is great generally. My only complaint with a very good control system is that it can be hard to drop down a level which is done with duck and B. However sometimes you don't drop and just duck which allows you to get whomped on!

Features: Good

Any time a game offers two-player simultaneous action it is a winner in my book. Otherwise the options are quite limited.

Fun?: Heck Yeah.

First of all this game is great 1 player. Then throw in the 2 player option and it's even better.

Challenge: Pretty Easy

The game isn't that tough but the last couple levels are a pain. The hatchets on the last level got me and I haven't played again. But I will defeat them!!

Replay: Sure

You won't play it everyday or anything but it's a fun game to pop in with a buddy over.  You also might want to beat the game once as quickly as possible by skipping certain stages on the map but then go back later to see the stages you missed along the way.

2 Player: Oh Yeah

Nothing like chucking your fellow chipmunk around!

Online Manual?: Yes at Nintendo Age

They’ve got ‘em all at www.nintendoage.com

 Bottom Line: Of Course

Get this second tier NES game especially if you are one of the few NESers out there with friends or dare I say a girlfriend to play it with.

2nd Opinion – Agent J: B

Another easy but enjoyable Capcom/Disney effort.  This one captures the show decently well.
